  1. Name one thing that Tokyo is famous for. This can be a place, a food, a fashion, an activity, an event or something else. Why is it so famous?
  2. Have you ever been to Tokyo? If so, tell the class about it. If not, would you like to go there some day?
  3. Name one famous person who is from Tokyo. Are they a presenter, a comedian, a chat show host, a singer, a dancer, a celebrity chef, a news anchor, an actor or an actress? If they are none of these, please explain what they are famous for.
  4. Research Time! Go online and look up their Wikipedia page (in English or in Japanese). Please now tell me; when were they born? Where were they born? How old are they? Are they married? Do they have any kids? What are they most famous for?
  5. How do you think everyday life in Tokyo is different to living in Nara? Would you like to live there some day?
  6. Why do you think Tokyo is the most popular city in Japan for foreign tourists?

If there is time, please ask your teacher Question 2 and Question 5.

Model Answers: Let’s Ask Eido

  1. Akihabara. It’s a shopping district for anime, manga, video games and computer goods. It’s also a center for otaku culture and draws a lot of tourism.
  2. Yes, I have. I went to Tokyo Dome to watch a Tigers vs Giants game about three years ago. It was intense. I remember thinking there were way more people in Tokyo than I expected.
  3. Kazunari Ninomiya. He is a singer, songwriter, actor, presenter and radio host.
  4. He was born in Katsushika, Tokyo on June 17, 1983. He will be thirty-six this year. I don’t think he is married and I don’t think he has any children. He is most famous either for being a member of the group Arashi or for being in the Hollywood movie “Letters From Iwo Jima”.
  5. I think life in Tokyo would be incredibly busy. My life in Nara is very quiet by comparison. I would like to live there for a while just for the experience but I think it might be too busy for me!
  6. Tokyo is the capital of Japan and is the biggest city. It makes sense that many foreign tourists want to visit there. I think when most people think of modern Japan and Japanese stereotypes, they are imagining Tokyo.
