Questions

  1. Name one Japanese professional athlete. What sport or sports are they famous for? Are they famous internationally? Are they active now or are they retired?
  2. Would you like to meet this person? If so, what would you say to them? If not, is there a professional athlete you would like to meet?
  3. Name one professional athlete who is NOT Japanese? What country are they from? What sport or sports are they famous for? Are they active now or are they retired?
  4. Research Time! Go online and look up their Wikipedia page (in English or in Japanese). Please now tell me; when were they born? Where were they born? How old are they? Are they married? Do they have any kids? What year was their "big break" in sports?
  5. Do you think professional athletes earn enough money, not enough money or too much money? Why do you think so?
  6. Imagine you were a famous professional athlete. What sport would you play? Would you like to compete in Japan or internationally? Which product or products would you want to sponsor you?

If there is time, please ask your teacher Question 5 and Question 6.

Model Answers: Let’s Ask Keiji

Keiji
  1. Kei Nishikori. He is a famous tennis player. Yes, he is famous internationally – he was ranked seventh by the Association of Tennis Professionals in 2018 and has won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. I think he is still playing tennis today.
  2. Yes, I would. I would like to ask him what motivated him to start playing tennis at age five. I also want to ask him what it was like moving to Florida when he was fourteen.
  3. Nick Kyrgios. He is an Australian tennis player and someone to watch in the future, I think. He was also a promising basketball player when he was a teenager. He is active now – he’s currently the fourth highest- ranked Australian in the ATP rankings.
  4. He was born in Canberra, Australia on April 27, 1995. Right now, he is twenty-four years old. He is not married yet and I don’t think he has any kids. His big break was in 2014 when he beat world number one Rafael Nadal to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
  5. I used to think professional athletes earned too much money. Now, I think most of them need to earn as much as quickly as they can because their careers are so short. It’s only the really lucky ones who make millions from endorsements.
  6. As much as I love tennis, I’d be a golfer if I were a professional athlete. Compared to most sports, golf doesn’t seem as taxing on your body so you could have a longer career. I’d want Nike or Apple to sponsor me, some big company that could afford to pay me a lot of money!
