Analysis of Each Week

A Week

  • Introduce key lexis and grammar to be used in the unit. The tried and tested method for pre-teaching vocabulary has been Quizlet. It works well, it’s easy to use, everyone is familiar with it already. Quizlet seems the best option for introducing lexis. Also use H5P Course Presentation to introduce the grammar and have a number of exercises within the presentation to confirm understanding.
  • Use the student’s book activities to reinforce what was covered in homework. Topic specific activity based on those suggested in the student book either from the “Communication” section or from “Language Focus” exercise E. Some of these will need a little thought or fleshing out but there is a lot here to work with.

B Week

  • Review of the lexis and grammar presented in A Week, in H5P Course Presentation similar to the A Week homework, though this should contain all new exercises. Watch the video that will be shown in class and answer questions while watching using H5P Interactive Video.
  • Topic specific activity based on those suggested in the student book either from the “Communication” section or from “Language Focus” exercise E. Activity 2 uses H5P Column to group the video and a number of related questions. Use some speculation exercises and some comprehension exercises in the same vein as “Before You Watch” and “After You Watch” from the student book. Feel free to use exercises from the PDF found on the “Resources” tab on the Cengage website. Finish with an H5P Image Slider to create a sildeshow of stills from the video for a YLE-style Documentary Planet. Ask the students rapid fire questions about things they can see in the picture, go on tangents about things they can remember from the video, and ultimately go beyond the video and ask questions about anything.

C Week

  • Listening comprehension with H5P Course Presentation featuring comprehension questions. World Kids Express Prep, much like EY prep; read the questions and model answers, be prepared to discuss in class. No “Video Planet Prep” as it has already been covered in B Week.
  • Work through “The Real World” exercises. Listen to the audio, answer the questions in the book, then go through the H5P Single Question Set extension questions. World Kids Express follows, questions incorporating the theme of the unit and the things they have just heard in “The Real World”. Finish the lesson with corrective feedback. This potentially leaves C Weeks ending on a less-than-high note, so this needs to be gamified. Suggest playing mini-games throughout each lesson (eg. toss the ball in the air, clap as many times as you can, then catch the ball), so this could be a way to keep things light. No “Video Planet” as it has already been covered in B Week.
  • End of unit quiz using LearnDash. Include final “question” of the “open answer” type as a substitute for diaries. This means they don’t have to write diaries so often for those students who dislike diaries. It also gives them three weeks to see and hear examples of how to use the unit’s target language in context and so apply it when writing their diaries. They should also feel free to write whatever they like in their diaries but bonus points for attempting to apply the material they have been studying recently.

D Week (Every Second Cycle – Ex. A,B,C,A,B,C,D etc.)

  • H5P content to review “everything” from the most recent two units. Use H5P Course Presentation, much like A Week and B Week homework. Can be combined into a single presentation to shuffle up and possibly combine the material being reviewed, or the two units can be kept as separate presentations. Quizlet to review vocabulary.
  • LearnDash quiz with questions appearing in random order and students taking turns in answering the questions. Use fake money to reward them, allow them chances to gamble with the money, include a few H5P content questions that are more visually interesting. Teacher should be logged in to the site as themselves to teach the lesson so any points scored would have to be manually added to student’s user accounts if these points will be carried over. Needs to be all or nothing approach here; all teachers do this or none do, else it becomes unfair on the students who don’t receive bonus points.
  • LearnDash “Big Test”. Similar things from the gameshow. No diary or workbook homework.
